Roswell Ivory Sunflower Shoot

5 May

Not the typical latex dress shoot, this, but we love its uniqueness. These photos by Ego photography were done for a layout in Alt Fashion magazine, modeled by Roswell Ivory.

We hope you like their summery, crazy feel as much as we do!

The dress in the photos is our Denise the Menace

Roswell Ivory & Pirate Photography Shoot

23 Mar

As I write this blog it is a really gloomy and windy winter’s day (even though it is spring!)

So I thought I would look out these lovely pictures from Pirate Photography with the model Roswell Ivory. They are taken on the beach with beautiful  light and remind me of a warm summer evening.

I particularly love how they managed to find a beach hut that was an exact match to their dress!

Here Roswell is wearing our Maria Man Trapp bodysuit in metallic old gold, Damsel in a Dress (puffed sleeve mini dress) in red and Denise the Menace dress in violet and lilac stripes.

Marilyn Monroe Latex Collection

1 May

Anatomic Bomb! is very proud and happy to present our new ‘Marilyn Monroe Latex Collection

This has been created to honour the 50th anniversary of Marilyn’s death in August 2012. The collection includes dresses, a uniform, bathing suit, showgirl costume and separates.

The collection is available on our website here:

http://www.anatomicbomb.com/marilyn-monroe-collection-20-c.asp

It is amazing to think that Marilyn is as much a part of our culture today as she was at the height of her career in the 1950′s. Her image hasn’t dated and she is still an inspiration to many.

This weblog describes the creative process of the collection and some info on Marilyn and her films.

Despite Marilyn being famous for her breasts it was surprising to note that she never showed off her cleavage. In fact it wouldn’t have been considered attractive. Marilyn’s most famous costume designer, used to say that Marilyn had “the best breasts in Hollywood”, not, as you might think, thanks to their size or pertness, but for the fact that they were naturally quite far apart. This allowed him to create dresses for her slashed to the waist without using the trick of using tape to keep them apart.
So, going against our usual cleavage enhancing rules we went along with this in our MM designs.

Marilyn wore lots of beautiful clothes in her movies so it was difficult to choose which ones we would like to replicate.
After watching her films over and over (Oh Boy, if only all work was as fun as that!) we finally whittled the choices down to the current ten costumes.

The choice of costumes were made by deciding which items would translate well in to rubber. Eg we weren’t able to choose some of our favourites like the ‘Little Rock’ dress from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes because one of the major design features of it is the red sparkly material. If this was made in latex it would just be a Vamp style dress, much like the ‘Yes, Mistress’ dress we already have. It would be very lovely but not unique enough to be in a Marilyn collection.

The Little Rock dress is a similiar shape to our Yes, Mistress dress

After choosing which costumes to make we the had to study them closely, viewing and pausing the scenes the clothes were in, in order to see details like pleating, bows, rear views etc.

The Seven Year Itch Dress
This is probably the most famous dress in the world in one of the most famous movie scenes. The latex colour of creamy white is closer to the colour of the original, which was called Bone. (Most replicas are made in white which is wrong). The chest area on this leads to wide halter straps. There are straps around the waist which tie in a bow with long tails trailing from the bow down the length of the skirt.
The original of this dress was covered in pleats which were all hand stitched. Putting pleats in to latex is difficult to make look good and such fine pleating wouldn’t have worked so we decided to make it unpleated.

Original Seven Year Itch Dress

Seven Year Itch Dress

Bus Stop Showgirl Costume
Worn by Marilyn’s character, Cheri. Emerald green latex with a fish-scale pattern in black. Decorated with gold fringing and 2 spaghetti straps on each shoulder. The bra cups are transparent black.
This costume takes a long time to make. The fringing is cut by hand and the fish-scale pattern is appliqued on by hand.
Cheri might be sad to see we did not give her a showgirl tail (there was a scene in the film where she was very upset  when someone pulled the tail off her costume). The tail is  some kind of ruched net but this would not have looked as nice as ruched latex on the back so we didn’t do it. Though we hope Cheri would still be happy with our version.

Blue Dress with Bows
A dress from ‘There’s No Business Like Showbusiness‘ in the scene where she manipulates the male lead in to letting her perform her ‘Heatwave’ song number. This is not a well known dress but we thought it was lovely and would translate really well in to rubber and hope you agree with us. It is cut high on the front neck with a back to front collar opening on to a very low cut back. A strap connects the front and back arm holes and has a cute bow on it. The original dress had button closures on the back but I decided to go for zip closure instead. We sometimes use button closures in our latex designs but only if the design really gains from it.  Zip closures on latex are much easier to get in and out of.

Misfits Cherry Dress
Worn by ‘Roslyn’ in The Misfits. Roslyn wears this dress to go for a day at the rodeo. The dress has a wide V neck line on the front and back. Straps are ruched on the shoulders and have a bow. The original dress has pleating at the waistband but we didn’t think this looked nice in rubber so left it plain.
This dress is painstakingly covered in cherries. Each cherry, cherry stalk and reflection on the cherry is cut out by hand and appliqued on!

Green Top, Violet Cummerband and Black Norma Jeans
This outfit was worn by Lorelei Lee in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. This was the scene where Lorelei was caught with Piggy as he was demonstrating to her how a python can squeeze a goat to death (Piggy was being the python and Lorelei the goat!).
The original top is a wrap around style. Our top looks like a wrap around style- it does not secure like a wrap around but instead has a zip on the back. Our cummerband secures with poppers on the side and has a tail.
The original trousers are dark blue. We made ours black and tighter. Our tight trousers are called, what else- Norma Jeans!
Marilyn also wore, what we think, is an identical outfit for her song ‘Lazy’ in There’s No Business like Showbusiness but for that it was in black with a turquoise cummerband. (For both films, Travilla designed the costumes).

1950s Orange Bathing Suit
Worn by the character Pola Debevoise in ‘How to Marry a Millionaire‘ in a fashion show scene. She looks an absolute Goddess in this scene- Marilyn at her finest.
In the film this costume also has a  jacket to match. Marilyn matched this with some great clear perspex thick soled shoes with ribbon lacing. She wore shoes like this (maybe the same ones) in many of her pin-up photos. Hollywood stars knew the secret of wearing nude shoes to make your legs look longer.
We think the original of this bathing suit was in red but with the Technicolor issues it was orange in the film. (That is why women couldn’t wear red lipstick in Technicolor films- it would show up on film as orange or brown).
Our bathing suit has a cleavage separator wire with Swarovski crystals. There is also brooch style crystal design on the hem of the suit.

Tiger Dress
This was worn by ‘The Girl‘ in a dream scene in The Seven Year Itch. (Marilyn’s character never had a name as the script writer of the original play could never think of a suitable and lovely enough name for her. After Marilyn played the part he agreed that he would have liked to call the character Marilyn)
It is a bustier dress with a long wrap around skirt.
This dress takes a long time to make- each tiger stripe is drawn then cut out by hand and appliqued on.
This dress is made from lovely gold latex with black tiger stripes.

Pink Diamonds Dress
Another very famous dress worn in a famous dance scene ‘Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend‘ from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
Again, due to Technicolor, there is a difference between the colour of the actual dress (pale pink) and the color it was on screen(more of a vibrant fuschia color).
We chose to use the original colour for our sample but would be happy to make it in future in the vibrant pink.
The original dress looks like a soft sheath but is actually a feat of engineering.
In the ‘Diamonds’ scene Marilyn dances around, and is carried over the set by her armpits by her male dancers. The long dress would also mean it could be easily stood on and pulled down by mistake. For these reasons the dress had to be made fall-down-proof. It has 2 bodices with lots of bones in the front and back. The whole dress is lined by billiard table felt! The big bow on the back is secured by invisible wires. The dress wraps over on the back and shows its black lining. The bow also has black lining.

Our dress is not quite as engineered as the original! Being made in stretchy latex it does tend to stay up well over the boobs (it hasn’t been tested to see if it will withstand being carried around by lots of male dancers. If anyone would like to test drive the dress in this way then get in touch!).
We decided to make it in pink only and not with black lining showing through.
It has a big bow on the back secured on with poppers. It also has boning on the back.
There is a kick out pleat on the back which makes the dress easy to walk or dance in.    The belt has a diamante buckle.
We matched the dress with opera length fingerless gloves.

Latex ‘Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend’ Dress

Pink Niagara Dress
This is a lovely dress in fuschia pink worn by Rose Loomis when she sings ‘Kiss‘ in the film Niagara, in order to torment her husband.
It has a wide rounded neck-line on front and back and capped sleeves. The cleavage ties together with a fake bow and the design shows off a small amount of midriff.
The original dress had a zip on the front but we decided that in latex, the zip looks nicer on the back.
The ideal length of this dress should be a few inches below the knee.

Hat-Check Girl Uniform
This lovely uniform was worn by Vicky Lester in ‘There’s No Business Like Showbusiness‘. Vicky was a hat-check girl in the film looking to become a star.
It is a dress with a short flared skirt which can be worn with or without a net petticoat. Off the shoulder neck-line has fancy frills. The frills have black latex ribbon threaded through them. Long sleeves with matching frilled cuffs. Apron has frilled edge and a big bow on the back.
We also gave our costume a neck collar with a pink rose like Vicky’s, which really sets off the costume.
We used artistic license and added a head band to match the uniform. Marilyn’s original costume had no hat or head piece but we   thought this would make the costume more wearable as a waitress/ maid’s uniform.

One of Marilyn’s favourite costume designers, and the man who created her most famous clothes, was Travilla.

When it was time to have the clothes photographed we felt very lucky to have Banbury Cross model for us, and 1 of our favourite photographers to shoot it- Tony Nylons. We were really thrilled with the results as they were just how we imagined when we embarked on the collection.

“I have been a life-time’s fan of Marilyn so to be able to make this tribute to her has been a dream come true.” – Madeline Warren

We hope others can get as much enjoyment out of the clothes as we have had in creating them.
